This project is located in East Orange County, one of the fastest growing areas of Orange County. Diverse types of development and development patterns characterize the area. The rate and size of growth activities also vary greatly. The developed area is primarily residential in character with nonresidential (institutional, commercial, industrial, and office) development along the corridor.  Many community facility uses, such as elementary schools, post offices, and fire stations also exist. The western side of the project is very urbanized. On the eastern side lies the University of Central Florida (UCF) with its associated urban development, as well as the Econlockhatchee River and surrounding rural development.

Project Description:

Improved capacity will lead to a decrease in travel time required by commuters and workers, minimizing the amount of wages lost due to long commuting times.  Specifically this area of Orange County has burgeoning growth of the University of Central Florida (UCF).  East SR 50 serves as a major access route for students traveling to and from Valencia Community College East Campus, and the University of Central Florida. Both schools are experiencing record attendance growth. UCF is predicting approximately 40,000 students in 2010 almost doubling the 1994 enrollment.  Also continuing to develop in the region are two large corporate parks, the Central Florida Research Park and the Quadrangle. This type of development will create new jobs in the county and region that will raise the median earnings of workers above the national average.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

The addition of two lanes to SR 50 enhance our economic competitiveness on a local, state, national, and global level by allowing additional development to be occur along the corridor and remain as an easy access route from the Florida Gulf coast to Port Canaveral.  Additionally, it is popular route for Florida residents and visitors traveling from east to west across Orange County, and perhaps more importantly, it serves as a major evacuation route for the East Central Coast of Florida.
