Project Description:

This program seeks to reduce the overwhelming number of children suffering from mental health problems and reduce the need for foster care placement.  The State of Florida recently constructed a strategic plan in order to alleviate disorders of childhood including depression, traumatic stress disorders and attachment disorders.  The Clay County Behavioral Infant Mental Health Program proposes to follow the state's strategic plan and provide services on three levels:

a.  Prevention practices for all children

b.  Relationship based mental health services for      children birth to age five.  These children may suffer from delays, disabilities or other risks for a variety of reasons.

c.  Effective mental health, substance abuse and co-occurring disorder treatment for primary care providers and children birth to age five.  This treatment includes children already exhibiting emotional disorders.

Clay County Behavioral Health Center currently provides prevention-based services for children ages six through seventeen.  The Infant Mental Health Program will complement the current services well.  Infant Mental Health will prevent delinquency, school failure, dropouts from school, substance abuse and a host of other social problems by its preventative nature.  A program as described builds strong families for the future.  Should more information be needed about this trend for Infant Mental Health www.zerotothree.com is an excellent reference.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

a.  Raise community and professional awareness of the need for Infant Mental Health Programs by presenting (24) twenty-four presentations during the year.  Participants will be provided with a pre and post test related to Infant Mental Health issues.

b.  Provide screening, assessment and referral to (20) families per month for children birth to age five.  These referrals include court, Department of Children and Families and other community agencies at no cost to the family.

c.  90% of families will be successfully engaged and benefit from the treatment provided, as is evidenced by increased level of family functioning scores.
