The purpose of this project is for improvement of the section of NW/SW Capital Circle from Springhill Road (CR2203) to I-10. This will provide a much needed intermodal connector between the Tallahassee Regional Airport and the major limited access highway in the southern United States (I-10). At this time, limited intermodal connections exist in this region. Connections are made to I-10 using urban arterials, which generally impede freight movements, given the amount of local traffic dependent on Capital Circle NW/SW for local area traffic movements. Plans for expansion of the Tallahassee Regional Airport will increase its viability as an intermodal facility. Additional capacity to this most direct connector to I-10 is necessary to insure successful and competitive economic development in this region that serves north Florida, southern Georgia, and southern Alabama. |

While it is difficult to establish exact numbers of jobs that might be created from this proposed improvement, enhanced transportation from the Regional Airport to I-10, along with scheduled Airport improvements, may incubate freight related opportunities which lie dormant in the project area. Expansion of the airport to include compatible airport land uses (industrial park) could in itself create additional jobs ranging from minimum wage to salaries comparable to managers in existing airport industrial locations. The WAGES program has been tapped as a beneficiary of improved transportation into the Regional Airport. The Tallahassee Regional Airport and surrounding ancillary facilities, is the primary intermodal facility in the central Florida panhandle. Unlike other panhandle regional transportation facilities in Panama City and Pensacola, it does not serve a military-dominated economy. Unlike all other Florida intermodal facilities, it does serve the seat of Florida state government. Because of its regional service orientation, and its strategic access to I-10, it serves a large geographic area, including north-central Florida, southern Georgia and Alabama. |
