Project Description:

To provide health fair and snack and learning to promote health of the citizens of Gretna and surrounding area. This project will be carried out in Gretna, a small rural community four miles west of Quincy in Gadsden County, Florida. Total population of the Gadsden County is 44,077.  It is one of the poorest counties in Florida with a median household income of 24, 881 in 1997, which was far below the Florida State average of 32,887.  The major employment is in agricultural activities. Sixty three percent of the County population is African-American and 30% of the population is under age 18.  The county also has a relatively large Hispanic population, especially with seasonally specific (demanding) farming activities such as Tobacco and Tomato crops.  In summary, Gadsden County and one of its constituents, Gretna, and its surrounding census tract areas, where this project will be carried out, have serious economic problems.  Additionally, these areas are faced with serious health problems which must be addressed.  Gadsden County ranks very high in all three disease areas of the leading causes of death, namely cardiac disease, cancer and CVA. STDs, infant mortality, and homicide rank equally high.  It is very saddening to see cancer, particularly prostate cancer in men, to be ranked highest in the State, as disease which could be treated if detected early.  These problems must be dealt with in an aggressive approach to solve the problems.
