Project Description: |

For eight years, the inner City Youth Center has provided an after-school haven designed to steal some of the time and give back to the disadvantaged kids as currency for purchasing a better life. Our organization promotes academic excellence through mandatory study hall sessions, and works to prevent juvenile delinquency by providing year-round education and sports programs. We provide free health testing and screening to the community at our two health fairs each year. We culminate each year with a scholarship awards ceremony benefiting students who plan to attend college. This year alone, in collaboration with with The Nat Moore Foundation, we awarded more than $70,000 to 23 deserving students. ICYC is located in and serves the economically depressed Liberty City/Little Haiti communities of Miami. Our participants are mostly African-Americans and children of Haitian descent. We serve a group that of as much as 250 kids who are 70% male and 30% female. The program focuses on education, health supervision, peer pressure, enhanced self-esteem and productive citizenship. The ICYC program goals are accomplished through a locally based, readily accesible, one stop education and recreation spervision center. Its programs are provided for the school age population after normal school hours. These positive events replace opportunities for other negative activities that could result in drug use, crime or teenage pregnancy. This has the ultimate effect of making a positive impact in the education standards and health of the ICYC population. In order to participate in the ICYC programs, all children and young adults must accept its standards. For participation in the highly supervised daily health awareness, education and recreation programs, the kids must demonstrate academic need, as determined by report cards and pre-and post-test score. They must commit to zero occurences of the following items: unexcused absences from school, drug abuse, participation in gangs and involvement with guns or crime. They are expected to participate in the workshops and in equal portions of study and recreation. |

Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
40% of students will show improvement or maintain good grades (C or above) as indicated by their report cards in English and math. 65% of students receiving at least 3 hours of tutoring per week, will make at least one year of progress in reading comprehension. 65% of students in the ICYC academic programs will be promoted to the next grade level as measured by school promotion records. Service objectives in health will show that participants will show a 30% decrese in health related absences from school after one semester participation. After 12 months of participation in the program 40% of students will increase their awareness of teen health issues as indicated by pre and post testing. At least 40% of teens who participate in the Pregnancy bPrevention Program for nine months will reduce high risk behaviors and atttitudes as measured by the behavior checklist and self report. |
