The statewide intrests this project addresses is in the need to have minority children of Seminole decent and cultural heritage, gain more knowledge about the history of the Tribes and major cultural, educational, and agricultural experience through the exchange with the State of Oklahoma. The benefits of the agricultural and economic exchange will trancend the county boundaries and help surrounding rural communities with the knowledge gained to help in future agricultural efforts.

Project Description:

The Florida Black Historical Research Project, Inc. (FBHRPI) started in 1996 as an effort to explore the seemingly hidden, Black Seminole history of Florida and Oklahoma. The mission is to bridge the over 160 year gap between Florida Black Seminoles and Oklahoma Black Seminoles and educate area youth of this Florida/Oklahoma relationship. This effort involves the participation and education of at least 100-200 kids per year.

We began establishing a relationship between the two cities, Riviera Beach, FL and Wewoka, OK and ultimately resulted in the formation of an official, relative cities inter-local agreement to coordinate a program to develop historical, cultural, agricultural and economic exchange between the two cities. Later, FBHRPI published a book entitled "We R Florida", which is presently located within the County's School library system, established a middle school sailing program and a youth exchange program between Wewoka, OK and Palm Beach County.

In keeping in compliance with the inter-local agreement and also fulfilling our local mission, we are currently: 1. Establishing an agricultural exchange with Oklahoma, which involves goat distribution and other added value argiculture products. 2. Constructing an Agriculture Lab to expose and educate area youth about career choices in the field of agiculture. 3. Negotiating acquistion and renovation of historical building in West Palm Beach. 4. Setting up a permanent exhibit at the Florida Historical Museum of Black Seminole History in Jupiter, FL.
