This project addresses improving water quality, at a minimum, as it relates to a large, regionally significant, highly degraded chain of lakes system. In addition, the upper Ocklawaha River and Lake Apopka are designated priority water bodies under the 1987 Surface Water Improvement and Management (SWIM) Act. |

The Upper Ocklawaha River Basin Iniative is an ongoing project to restore, protect, and enhance the upper Ocklawaha River, its tributaries, and Lake Apopka. funding through the initiative will help to restore and enhance this chain of lakes system. Examples of subprojects that could be funded through this request follow. This list is in alphabetical order and is not a complete listing.-- Contamination Remediation-Remediation of Soils and Excessive Residual Pesticide Concentrations in the North Shore Restoration Area (Lake Apopka); Development of Pollutant Load Reduction Goals for the Harris Chain of Lakes; Enhanced Lake Level Fluctuations; Habitat Restoration-Planting of Desirable Vegetation on Lake Apopka; Nutrient Loading Reduction; Ocklawaha River Basin Feasibility Study; Phosphorus Concentration Reduction-Construction of inflow pump station for Lake Apopka Flow-Way, Phase I; Phosphorus Concentration Reduction-North Shore Restoration Area (Lake Apopka); Wetland and Aquatic Habitat Restoration |

Improved water quality (ie., reduced phosphorus levels); percentage reduction in average phosphorus loading to the Harris Chain of Lakes; increased discharge of flood waters along the natural flow-path that existed between Lakes Harris and Griffin before the 1920's; modifications along the Dora Canal to reduce structural flooding; less residual pesticide contaminants in soils; acres of submerged aquatic vegetation. |
