Project Description:

Continuing phosphorus loading hinders efforts to restore water quality in the Harris Chain of Lakes.  District estimates of phosphorus loading indicate that stormwater is a significant source of nutrients entering the lakes.  In 1991. Lake County completed a Stormwater Management Needs Assessment and a subsequent examination of the 252 drainage basins in Lake County.  To retrofit existing developments that directly discharge untreated stormwater runoff to reduce phosphorus loading to the lake, Lake County Water Authority and the Lake County Commission estimate that they will generate about $2,000,000 in FY 2001-2002.  The project will be a 50-50 cost share with the local partners to construct stormwater treatment systems in drainage basins that are contributing high levels of nutrients in an effort to reduce nutrient loading to the Harris Chain of Lakes.
