Job Title

OPS Member Service Desk (Journal/Runner)

General Summary

The Office of the Clerk is accepting applications for an OPS Member Service Desk (Journal/Runner).  This is full-time temporary employment during the legislative session.

January 13 through March 13, 2020

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

The OPS Member Service Desk (Journal/Runner) is responsible for monitoring session; taking Bills from the House Chamber to Engrossing and Enrolling; taking documents needed to write Journal copy from the House Chamber to the Journal Writers; and managing workflow at the Member Service desk in the House Chamber making copies for Members and Staff and general Chamber Support.
 
Major Duties include the following
 
Monitor session.
Run Bills from the House Chamber to Engrossing and Enrolling in room 1502 of the Capitol.
Run documents needed to write Journal copy from the House Chamber to the Journal Writers in room 1502 of the Capitol. 
Manage workflow of Member Service desk in House Chamber making copies for Members and Staff and general Chamber Support.
 
Specific Duties include the following
 
Assist the Lead Assistant Clerk by reading Journal copy aloud as part of the verification process and perform other work assigned by the Verification Coordinator.
Duties of this position include proofreading manuscripts giving special attention to grammar, spelling, and punctuation and verifying the accuracy of printed materials prepared by the Clerk’s Office.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of relevant House rules, and knowledge of legislative process and terminology, is necessary.  Knowledge of the names and leadership positions of the representatives and the ability to learn to visually recognize them is also necessary.  The ability to function effectively when fatigued is necessary.
 
Position requires energy, stamina, good attendance, punctuality, and a positive team spirit. The ability to concentrate and function effectively despite noise and distraction is a necessity.  Job demands must be met under pressure and require an individual who recognizes the need for urgency and responds with initiative and accuracy.
 
Must maintain confidentiality and remain non-partisan, abiding by all statutory requirements and House of Representatives rules and policies relating to political activity.
 
A positive, helpful, and professional impression must be conveyed to legislators, the general public, and other staff.

Minimum Qualifications

A high school diploma or its equivalent and two years of secretarial and/or clerical experience.  Possession of a Certified Professional Secretary (CPS) Certificate can substitute for the required experience.  College education can substitute at the rate of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours for each year of the required work experience.  Vocational/technical training in an area of secretarial science or office/business studies can substitute at the rate of 720 classroom hours for each year of the required work experience.

Special Requirement

Ability to type at a rate of 50 correct words per minute and to proficiently use word processing software.  
 
Good grooming and business attire are required.  During session, male staff members are required to wear coat and tie in the House Chamber.

Rate of Pay

$11.72/hour
