Project Description:

Federation Transportation Services, Inc., (FST) a wholly owned subsidiary corporation of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, was established in 1993 in response to the outcry in south Palm Beach County for the frail elderly and disabled in our community.  To meet the continuing growing needs, FTS has worked closely with FDOT to acquire 49 U.S.C. 5310 grant vehicles, and with the Palm Beach County Commissioners (PalmTran) and DCF to obtain service contracts.  Weekly, over one hundred elderly and handicapped citizens use FTS for transport to sheltered employment, doctors appointments and for food shopping.  FTS had become their lifeline to the community, providing access to life sustaining activities as independently as possible, without burdening friends and family members or having to rely on them to provide the needed transportation.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

These funds will be used to provide 120 hours of service a week in our community to our most needy.  These dollars will be the difference in their independence.  It has been shown that dollars spent on community services help to keep our elderly out of assisted living facilities and nursing homes.  Community based initiatives are essential for the success of independent living in our community.  These funds will allow 20 persons daily to attend adult day care and senior programming offered by the Adolph and Rose Levis Jewish Community Center in their new Adolph and Rose Levis Alzheimer/Adult Day Care Center and Phyllis and Harvey Sandler Center for Jewish Life Enhancement.
