Project Description:
The African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC) will be a research library for scholars, students and the general public focusing its collections, programs and exhibits on African-America history and culture in Florida, the Caribbean, South American and Africa.
Services Provided/Benefit to State:
Preservation of the lives and culture of persons of African-American and Caribbean descent in the state and region, a respository of books, documents, photos, oral histories, and artifacts that are in danger of disappearing. Judging by statistics from the only other centers similar to the AARLCC currently existing in the U.S. - the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African-American Culture and History in Atlanta and the Schomberg Library in New York City - the AARLCC will attract many hundreds of tourists and researchers to the State of Florida annually.
Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
*The preservation of hundreds of individual, family, community and organizational histories throughout Florida. * A destination for thousands of local library users and visitors from Florida, the U.S. and the world. *A cultural connection to more than 500 schools, colleges, universities, museums, and cultural organizations throughout the State. *A community library serving 50,000-100,000 citizens annually.
